Marianne (Smith) Orr is originally from Frankfort, Indiana and now lives with her family in Forest, Indiana. This will be Marianne’s first year coaching at Circle City, however she has been around the club since 2003 when her oldest daughter Aquila played for Circle City. Marianne has had all four of her daughters play for Circle City. Last year, Hadley Orr played on 14 Purple and Tenley Orr played on 12 White.
Marianne attended Purdue University on a full volleyball scholarship. She was a volleyball letter winner in 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1985. Marianne was inducted into Purdue’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
In 1985, Orr was selected as a First Team All-American and was the Big Ten’s first volleyball All-American. She also was a member of the U.S. World University Student Games team, Purdue Female Athlete of the Year, recipient of the Purdue Varsity Walk Award, and named a tri-captain of the team in 1985. Orr earned Big Ten Player of the Year honors in 1984 and 1985 and helped lead Purdue to two Big Ten Championships (1982 and 1985). Marianne aalso helped Purdue post a record of 118-23 during her four years, including the best mark ever, 33-1, in 1982.
At graduation, Orr was Purdue’s all-time leader in block assists, second in service aces, third in kills and fourth in kill attempts. She still holds the record service aces in an individual match with 9 against Butler on Sept. 13, 1985. She also holds the record for single season service aces with a total of 93 in 1984. Orr is still ranked among the single season top 10 for kills, kills per game, block solos, block assists, total blocks and blocks per game. Orr holds the career total blocks record with 567 from 1982-1985 and still ranks among the top 10 in kills, service aces, block solos, block assists, hitting percentage and blocks per game.
