Bruce Asper joins Circle City for his first season and 8th year coaching club volleyball after a 7 year stint in Southern California. Bruce coached for both the Orange County Volleyball Club (girls) and Balboa Bay Volleyball Club (boys) in Newport Beach, CA. Over 20 of his athletes have gone on to successful Division 1 careers, including USA National Team members Brandon Taliaferro (UCLA) and Fred Robins (Hawaii). He also coached AVP standout and All American Matt Fuerbringer (Stanford) and current AVP star Rachel Wacholder (Colorado.) He played at middle blocker at volleyball powerhouse Newport Harbor High School, whose alumni includes current AVP stars Misty May (Long Beach State) and April Ross (USC), along with Steve Timmons (USC) and current UCLA starter Kyle Caldwell. After high school he went on to play in two AVP events in the late 1980’s with his best finish being a 13th. In 1986 he was ranked the 152nd best beach player in the world by Volleyball Monthly, the lowest ranking possible. All 7 of Bruce’s boy’s 14-1 teams made Junior Olympics, with two of them winning Junior National Championships.
Bruce’s sister, Lara, is accomplished as both a player and coach. Lara was voted first team CIF (Southern California’s high school athletics governing body) three of her four years in high school and was an All American at Stanford for 2 of her 3 years playing. She played on both the USA Junior National team and the USA National team. She had a distinguished career as the head coach at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO and won a national title as an assistant at Stanford in 1996, where one of her players was future beach volleyball great Kerri Walsh.
Bruce has three children; an 8 year old daughter, Mary and twin 4 year old boys, Patrick & Peter. He has a successful commercial real estate practice in Indianapolis with Meridian Real Estate.
